Mining & Sustainable Development Ltd (M&SD)
M&SD Is a partnership that advises mining companies and investment funds on realising the goals of sustainable development through their mining activities, and improving the long-term sustainability of their investments.
Miners have played an important role in responding to the coronavirus challenge, increasing awareness that mining can become a partner to promote and establish a new framework for COVID-19 recovery, strengthening the importance of a collaborative response from govenaments, businesses and communities.
Why sustainable development?
There is a growing awareness globally of the critical importance of sustainable development. This has been demonstrated by the international consensus on the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change and by UN member states’ unanimous support for the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) included in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
There is also increasing recognition within the business community of the important role that the private sector has to play in the shared international challenge of achieving the SDGs.
Whilst all business enterprises can make a contribution towards the attainment of sustainable development, the ability to make a difference varies by sector and organisation, we focus on mining.
Why mining?
Mining, minerals and metals are essential for the functioning of modern societies and economies, and they are critical for the economic and social development of many countries. At the same time, the process of mining creates challenges and risks for the well-being of people and the environment.
Mining companies have the potential to become leading partners in the move towards the implementation of the SDGs. Many mining firms are already fully committed to this challenge, but much effort is still required to ensure the industry as a whole has a positive impact on the natural environment, on climate change and on social capital.
